European Council concerned about judicial independence in Spain

On 2014 the European Council reported an evaluation of "Corruption prevention in respect of members of parliament, judges and prosecutors" in Spain. The report identified several shortcomings and proposed a list of recommendations ( read the full report here) . Nevertheless in 2016 European Council reported that the recommendations had not been implemented and strongly criticized Spain for failing to comply with its recommendations to strengthen judicial independence. ( see full report here and the news appeared in La Vanguardia - Spanish ) From Catalonia Alert we want to highlight this lack of Judicial Independence (reported by European Council) to contextualize the prosecution and imprisonment of two civil society leaders , accused of secession.

#ALERT Two social organizations and Catalan Police investigated for sedition

The Presidents of the two most important pro independence social organizations (ANC and Omnium) and the Head of Catalan Police are today declaring at the Audiencia Nacional (a special and exceptional high court in Spain). They are investigated for sedition. ANC and Omnium have been leading the social pro-independence peaceful demonstrations (where more than 1million people took part). During Catalan Referendum they have been always successfully promoting peaceful acts. Mr. Trapero (head of the Catalan Police) is being investigated for their "blatant inaction" during the assault to Polling Stations where more than 800 peaceful people were injured by Guardia Civil and Spanish Police. ANC was founded in 2011 and it has 40.000 members and 39.000 volunteers. Omnium is an historical organization founded in the 60s to promote Catalan culture and language. It has 68.000 members. Is there a Chance to Defuse the Catalonia Crisis?

The 19th of October Editorial from The New York Times says "A Chance to Defuse the Catalonia Crisis". It is a worth reading article to understand the actual difficult situation. The New York Times thinks that "the door is not yet closed" and proposing the terms on which the tension might be de-escalated: 1) The Catalans could affirm that their independence is in abeyance 2) Madrid could signal it is prepared for greater Catalan autonomy. While the point 1 is real (it is a fact that the formal declaration did not happened) the point 2, is just a minor offer from Madrid that would be not accepted on the other side. So if nothig more creative appears, 155 article and Independence declaration will be a fact in one week time...
